Otter Diet

To better understand the role that otters play in Appalachian ecosystems, we are evaluating their diet in West Virginia. Thanks to a collaborative effort between WV trappers, WV Division of Natural Resources, and WVU, we have been collecting otter carcasses from across the state since 2020. We are assessing otter diet by identifying prey species found in the stomachs of these otter carcasses. The Wild Genomics lab is applying a DNA metabarcoding approach to this process, which identifies prey species within the otter stomachs at the molecular level. When available, results will be summarized here.
